Fall is here and one of my favorite things to do in the fall is light a candle. I’ve seen an article from Woman’s Day floating around that was published in 2015. In this article they talk about the various health effects from traditional candles. When I started swapping out for safer the traditional candles went out the door with all of my plug in air fresheners. Most of those items are artificially scented with chemicals that are known hormone disruptors, carcinogens and allergens.
I will oftentimes use essential oils, but sometimes I just want a candle burning.
Most conventional candles use petroleum wax for the base which negatively effects indoor air quality. You want to look for candles that have bases of bees wax or non-gmo soy wax. You also want to make sure they are scented with essential oils.
The tricky thing about finding non-GMO soy candles in the U.S. is that it is extremely difficult as most soy is GMO. A year ago I stumbled across Woodlot candles that are produced in a small apothecary studio based in Canada. They are made with cotton core wicks, scented with essential oils and hand poured with renewable coconut wax and GMO-free soy wax. I have purchased the Cinder scent which is infused with Cedar, Vetiver, Orange and Cinnamon; Wildwoods, which is scented with Balsam, Fir and Clove. This one will be perfect when I’m ready to get in the Christmas spirit.
I’ve been burning these since I first found them and love their scents and they do not give me headaches or cause me to be stuffed up. It’s so nice to be able to burn a candle again!
