Menstrual Cups and Discs

With all the talk about the recent findings of lead and arsenic in tampons I wanted to re-share my go to’s for the past 9 years!⁣

The study that was just released showed levels of lead and arsenic. This isn’t surprising as heavy metals are naturally occurring and showed in both organic and non organic products. Where I see issue is the lack of testing/research as to how these components impact our health when we are exposed through our vaginal tissue, that is highly absorbent, month after month. We don’t know the impact that this might have on us.⁣

Over the course of a woman’s lifetime she uses approximately 16,000 tampons or pads. Most conventional tampons contain chemicals (many of which aren’t safe) to make them more absorbent. Tampons can be made out of cotton, but many contain rayon, which is a synthetic material. It is believed that synthetic fibers can pull too much moisture from the vaginal walls and stick to the soft skin there, leaving tiny synthetic fibers. Also, pulling too much moisture out of the vagina can lead to itching and irritation.⁣

The tampons and pads that are often made of cotton are usually bleached with chlorine or other chemicals (herbicides/pesticides) may be used. ⁣

Menstrual cups/discs! ⁣
While they aren’t for everyone I’ve been using one for the past 9 years (aside from pregnant postpartum) and I’m a believer. My only regret is that I didn’t start sooner. ⁣

There are several versions out there so if you are thinking about making the switch do a little research to find the one that will work best for you. My favorite resource for helping find a menstrual cup/disc is @putacupinit.

Why do I love it? I don’t have to worry about changing a tampon every so many hours due to heavy flow and leaking (it can be left in up to 12 hours). There is no string to worry about, no landfill waste, & I’m saving money. There are a few “cons’, but none of them bother me. This isn’t going to be for everyone, but if you think you might like it I urge you to give it a try. ⁣

I’m an open book so ask me any questions you might have!⁣
