What is a B Corp?
I am proud to work for Beautycounter for many reasons, but the fact that they are a B Corporation is at the top of the list.If you aren’t familiar with what a B Corporation is, it is a for-profit company certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.Today, there are more than 1,600 Certified B Corps from 42 countries and over 120 industries working together toward 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business. Some of the more well known B Corporations are Ben & Jerry’s, Patagonia, and The Honest Co. Beautycounter has joined the ranks of these companies because we believe that business should be a tool for positive change. “Social responsibility and environmental stewardship should not be pitted against the desire for financial success. Most importantly for Beautycounter, we want to show that making health-protective decisions about the ingredients we use can be good for the people, the planet, and for profit. This t-fold commitment means that we’re a “triple bottom line” business.” http://www.beautycounter.com/know-everything/beautycounter-is-proud-to-be-b-corpHow does a company become a B Corporation?1) Meet the Performance Requirement: Complete the B Impact Assessment—a comprehensive audit of a company’s practices and policies. The company must earn a minimum score of 80 out of 200 points.2) Meet the Legal Requirement: Adopt the B Corporation Legal Framework to bake the triple bottom line mission of the company into its legal DNA. This allows the company’s values to thrive under new management, new investors, and new ownership.3) Make it Official: Sign a Term sheet and Declaration of Interpendence to make the certification official. When I get asked if Beautycounter is like other direct sales companies, the answer is a resounding “no”. Our products could easily be sold in brick and mortar stores, but we chose this channel because we have an important story to tell. With a mission as big as our bottom line, we're changing lives and changing laws one conversation, one social media post or one Beautycounter social at a time.We are on an incredible mission and I am so proud to be a part of it. I didn’t know that when I said “yes” to this job almost 3 years ago it would be the most rewarding work I have done to date. And, that says a lot after being a burn nurse for 6 years and a Family Nurse Practitioner for 5. I pinch myself daily that I get to wake up and do this work and be such an integral part of the voice for change.
