Magnesium

There are so many types of magnesium and it can get overwhelming! Many of us are deficient due to diets high in processed foods. High calcium diets also have the potential to drive magnesium levels low. Despite many natural food sources having the potential for abundance levels of magnesium we aren’t getting enough. Many medications can also deplete our magnesium levels. ⁣

Magnesium is responsible for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body and impacts metabolism, hormones, heart health and immune function. Magnesium is a mineral that is necessary for optimal mitochondrial function.⁣

Low magnesium levels can contribute to muscle cramps, PMS, memory problems, heart irregularities, asthma, allergies, insulin resistance and diabetes. It can even exacerbate SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) symptoms by inhibiting the conversion of tryptophan to 5-HTP, which can decrease the production of mood-stabilizing serotonin and melatonin. Magnesium is needed to create the powerful antioxidant, glutathione. This is crucial for our immune system. It is also important in the regulation of blood glucose.⁣

It is extremely important for our vitamin D level production and plays a critical role in the synthesis and metabolism of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D. And, as most of us are deficient in vitamin D and have been instructed to take it, it can actually drive those magnesium levels even lower. Also, if magnesium levels aren’t adequate and you supplement vitamin D you likely won’t convert your vitamin D to a useable form. How many have tested their D level, supplemented and it barely budged? ⁣

Quality and type matters when looking for a magnesium supplement and there are so many ways to use it! As always, let me know if you have questions! ⁣
