Spice of Life: Turmeric

Another supplement question I frequently receive at the gym is what to take to help with recovery and help with injury. My top recommendation is Turmeric.Turmeric is a spice that has been around for thousands of years, but only recently has it gained popularity for more than seasoning and giving food color. It’s used to give mustard it’s yellow color and has been used to dye fabrics. It is thought to believe that the component of turmeric that gives it its vibrant color, curcumin, is also responsible for many health benefits. It has shown to be a very powerful antioxidant.

One of the main health benefits is reducing inflammation. Inflammation is believed to be involved in many diseases including heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and chronic pain. There are many factors that play into the inflammatory cascade, including many lifestyle factors (e.g. diet, sleep). There are currently clinical trials looking at the benefit of turmeric supplementation on Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, and diabetes. This is incredibly exciting and I love nothing more than the thought of ways to naturally prevent and address health issues!Recommended dose is 800-1000mg/day.Good turmeric supplement- https://www.amazon.com/Gaia-Herbs-Turmer…/…/ref=sr_1_1_s_it…CBS article on turmeric-http://www.cbsnews.com/news/turmeric-the-spice-of-life/
