Fevers Have a Purpose

Fevers are often misunderstood. They are not just a symptom of an infection but are part of the body's defense mechanism. When the body temperature rises, cellular mechanisms are activated to ensure that the immune system responds appropriately to the virus or bacteria responsible for the infection. Hence, not all fevers need to be reduced.

Ways to Support a Fever

There are several natural remedies that can be employed to support a fever. These methods do not suppress the fever but help the body cope with it.

1. Homeopathy

Refer to our detailed post about using homeopathy to support a fever.

2. Epsom Salt Bath Soaks

These provide magnesium and help cool the body down while drawing out toxins.

3. Essential Oils

Peppermint oil, when diluted and applied to the spine or bottoms of feet, can be soothing and cooling.

4. Electrolytes/Fluids/Minerals- Make use of products like LMNT, Redmond’s Relyte, and Seeking Health Optimal Electrolyte. Biofulvic or Mother Earth Labs Humic/Fulvic Acid are also excellent choices.

Wet Sock Treatment

A lesser-known but effective method to support a fever is the Wet Sock Treatment. But what exactly is it?

What is Wet Sock Treatment?

Cold socks can help increase blood circulation and promote a healthy respiratory system and throat. The increased circulation supports lymphatic movement and stimulates your immune system. Cold socks can also act as a “warming treatment” and help your body heat itself during the night.

How to do the Wet Sock Treatment

You would need a pair of white cotton socks, a pair of thick wool socks, and a towel. Here are the steps:

  1. Take cotton socks and soak them with cold water. Wring them out thoroughly so they do not drip. Place in a freezer for 10-20 minutes.

  2. While the socks are cooling, get into a warm bath. This is crucial!

  3. Dry off.

  4. Remove the cotton socks from the freezer and bend them to the point where they can be worn. Place socks on the feet and cover the cold socks with a pair of thick, dry wool socks. Go directly to bed and keep the socks on overnight.

By understanding the purpose of a fever and how to support it naturally, we can work with our bodies to recover from illnesses.

* Remember, it's always important to consult with a healthcare professional if symptoms persist or worsen.
